Origin of Name

The genus name Aloe comes from the Arabic name of these perennial succulents. The specific epithet harlana references Harla, the name of both a historic ethnic group and the region of Ethiopia they inhabited.

Technical Description of Plant

Aloe harlana stands out with its densely packed, lance-shaped leaves forming a rosette. The green leaves may exhibit subtle variations in color, adorned with lighter spots or stripes, and are edged with small, tooth-like projections. The plant is celebrated for its striking orange-red flowers that emerge on tall spikes, providing a vivid contrast to its foliage during the blooming season.

Origin of Plant

Originating from Ethiopia, Aloe harlana is adapted to rocky and arid terrains, demonstrating remarkable drought resistance. This species has evolved to store significant amounts of water in its leaves, enabling it to survive in environments with prolonged dry periods.

Conservation Status

While Aloe harlana does not have a designated conservation status, it faces general threats from habitat destruction and the illegal plant trade, common to many species within the Aloe genus. Efforts to conserve this plant focus on habitat protection and encouraging the cultivation of nursery-grown specimens to reduce pressure on wild populations.

Care Instructions

Aloe harlana thrives in bright, indirect sunlight but can also adapt to some direct sunlight exposure. It requires well-draining soil to prevent root rot, with watering necessary only once the soil has fully dried. The plant prefers warmer climates and needs protection from frost, making it suitable for indoor cultivation in cooler regions. Fertilization should be minimal, sufficient to support its growth and flowering phases.
