Origin & History of Name The genus name Aztekium derives from the plant’s wrinkled, folded appearance, which botanist Friedrich Bödeker noted bore a striking resemblance to the geometric step-pyramid sculptures of the Aztec civilization. The specific epithet ritteri honors Friedrich Ritter, the German traveler and cactus specialist who discovered this species in Mexico in 1928, cementing its place in botanical history as a distinct and highly prized discovery.

2. Morphology Aztekium ritteri is a miniature, globose cactus characterized by its distinctively sculpted ribs (costae) and complex transverse sulci (grooves) that create a textured, rugged epidermis. It typically possesses 9 to 11 ribs, with the areoles situated close together along the edges, producing weak, twisted spines that often weather away with age. The plant's olive-green to greyish body is firm and compact, rarely exceeding 5 cm in diameter, evolving into a clump-forming specimen over many decades.

3. Habitat & Origin This is a wild species endemic to the abrupt limestone cliffs of Rayones in Nuevo León, Mexico. Due to over-collection and a limited natural range, it is critically endangered in the wild and protected under CITES Appendix I.
