Origin & History of Name: The genus name Coryphantha is derived from the Greek words koryphe (summit) and anthos (flower), referring to the characteristic flowers that emerge from the top of the plant. The species name radians is Latin for "radiating" or "shining," specifically describing the way its dense, needle-like spines spread outward like the rays of the sun. It was formally described in the 19th century as part of the botanical effort to categorize the diverse flora of the Chihuahuan Desert.
2. Morphology: This cactus features a globose to cylindrical epidermis that remains solitary, rarely offsetting. Its surface is divided into prominent, rounded tubercles (nodules) rather than continuous costae (ribs). Each areole at the tubercle tip produces a "radiating" cluster of stiff, yellowish-to-brown radial spines that overlap to form a protective, cage-like structure. It produces large, funnel-shaped yellow flowers with a silky texture from the plant's apex.

It typically grows in limestone-rich soils among scrubland.
