The name Echinopsis subdenudata inermis combines "Echinopsis," the genus name known for its diverse cacti species, with "subdenudata" referring to the lack of noticeable spines on this variety. The term "inermis" likely emphasizes the absence of spines on this particular type of cactus. This name highlights both the taxonomic classification and the unique feature of this succulent.
Technical Description of Plant: Echinopsis subdenudata inermis, also known as the Easter Lily Cactus or Domino Cactus, is a small cactus with grayish-green spherical stems featuring 8 to 12 ribs sparsely lined with white wooly areoles. The stems can grow up to 3.2 inches (8 cm) tall and up to 4.8 inches (12 cm) in diameter, usually solitary or slowly producing offsets at the base. Each areole bears one central spine and 3 to 7 radial spines in the normal form. However, inermis form does not have spines. Fragrant night-blooming white flowers, funnel-shaped and up to 6 inches long, appear in summer, adding to its allure.
Origin of Plant: Echinopsis subdenudata is native to Bolivia, specifically found in regions like Santa Cruz, Tarija, Chuquisaca, and possibly Paraguay. This cactus species thrives in grasslands, shrublands, and forests at elevations between 600 and 1,800 meters above sea level. The inermis form is nursery cultiated.
Conservation Status: Being a garden produced cultvar the cactus does not have a conservation status.
Care Instructions: To care for Echinopsis subdenudata inermis, provide it with bright indirect sunlight or partial shade. Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out almost completely between waterings to prevent root rot. Avoid prolonged dampness and sitting water around the roots. Fertilize lightly during the growing season for optimal growth. This cactus can be propagated from offsets clustered around the base of the mother plant by cutting them close to the stem and rooting them in fast-draining cactus soil mix. With proper care tailored to its specific needs, Echinopsis subdenudata inermis will thrive and bloom regularly, showcasing its unique beauty in any collection.
