1. Origin & History of Name: The genus name Euphorbia honors Euphorbus, the Greek physician to King Juba II of Numidia, who reportedly used the plant’s caustic latex for medicinal purposes. The specific epithet unispina is derived from the Latin uni- (one) and spina (thorn), directly referencing its defining characteristic: a single, stout spine emerging from each tubercle.
2. Morphology: This succulent shrub features thick, cylindrical, greyish-green stems. Its unique morphology is defined by prominent tubercles (wart-like bumps) arranged in a spiral pattern. From the apex of each tubercle, a solitary, dark stipular spine emerges. Periodically, the plant produces ephemeral, fleshy green leaves at the growing tips, leaving behind a clean, geometric epidermis once they shed.
