While often called the "Black Prince" or "Abidjan," the common name "Rubber Plant" stems from the 19th-century discovery by botanist William Roxburgh that its milky sap could be used to produce a low-grade rubber before the Hevea brasiliensis became the industry standard.
2. Morphology: This cultivar is defined by its thick, leathery epidermis with a high concentration of anthocyanins, giving the leaves their deep burgundy-to-black pigment. New growth emerges from a vibrant red stipule (protective sheath).
