1. Origin & History of Name: The genus name Gerrardanthus honors William Tyrer Gerrard, a 19th-century British botanical collector who explored Southern Africa. The specific epithet macrorrhizus is derived from the Greek makros (large) and rhiza (root), directly referencing the plant's massive, swollen base. It was formally described in the 1860s as part of the Cucurbitaceae (cucumber) family.

Morphology: This "Big Foot" plant is characterized by its massive caudex—a woody, water-storing swelling of the stem base that features a greyish-green epidermis with a cracked, stone-like texture. From this base, it produces thin, perennial vines with ivy-shaped, slightly succulent leaves. Unlike many succulents, its beauty lies in the contrast between the rugged, heavy base and the delicate, climbing foliage.
