Origin of Name

Haworthia obtusa gets its name from the Latin word 'obtusus', meaning 'blunt' or 'rounded'. This refers to the rounded, almost dome-shaped appearance of the leaves, which is a defining characteristic of this species.

Technical Description of Plant

Haworthia obtusa is a small, rosette-forming succulent known for its distinctive and attractive appearance. The plant typically grows to about 3-4 inches in height and diameter. It forms dense, compact rosettes of thick, fleshy leaves. These leaves are notable for their translucent, bluish-green hue and smooth, glossy texture. The tips of the leaves are particularly translucent, resembling small windows, allowing light into the interior of the leaf. This feature is an adaptation to the plant's natural growing conditions, enabling it to photosynthesize efficiently while partially buried under soil or rock. Haworthia obtusa blooms infrequently, but when it does, the flowers are small, white, and appear on slender, elongated stems.

Origin of Plant

Haworthia obtusa is native to South Africa, particularly in the Western and Eastern Cape provinces. It typically grows in rocky outcrops and is adapted to semi-arid environments, thriving in well-drained soils.

Conservation Status

As of the latest update, Haworthia obtusa is not listed as an endangered species. However, like many succulents, it faces threats from habitat loss and illegal collection in its natural habitat. Sustainable cultivation and responsible trade are crucial for preserving these unique plants.

Care Instructions

Haworthia obtusa is relatively easy to care for, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced succulent enthusiasts. It prefers bright, indirect light but should be protected from intense direct sunlight, which can scorch its leaves. The plant thrives in well-draining soil and requires moderate watering, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. During the winter months, reduce watering to prevent root rot. Haworthia obtusa is not frost-tolerant and should be kept in a temperate environment. Fertilization is not necessary, but a diluted succulent fertilizer can be applied sparingly during the growing season.
