Candy-Streaked Radiance: Lobivia hybrid 'Eros'

An exquisite floral performer distinguished by its bicolor candy-pink petals and striking radial white variegation.

  1. Origin & History of Name: The genus name Lobivia is an anagram of Bolivia, the country where many of its constituent species were first discovered. The cultivar name 'Eros' refers to the Greek god of love and desire, a nod to the plant's heart-shaped floral aesthetic and the passionate pink hues of its petals.
  2. Morphology: This hybrid displays a compact, globose epidermis with pronounced, tuberculate costae (ribs). The blooms are diurnal (day-blooming) and show unique variegation on the petals, characterized by candy-pink pigments interrupted by irregular white longitudinal streaks. A dense cluster of golden-yellow stamens creates a high-contrast central core.
  3. Habitat & Origin: 'Eros' is a complex cultivar derived from species originally native to the high-altitude Andean regions of South America. It is the result of selective hybridization aimed at maximizing floral diameter and color complexity. Our stock is produced through sustainable laboratory or nursery propagation, bypassing the need for wild harvesting.
  4. Cultivation Profile:
    • Substrate: Use a high-drainage mineral mix (e.g., 2 parts crushed brick/pumice to 1 part organic leaf mold) to suit the varied humidity of the Indian subcontinent.
    • Light: Requires intense, bright light to maintain a compact form. In Northern India, provide full sun in winter, but use 35% green shade netting during the extreme heat of May and June.
    • Water/Dormancy: Water deeply during the spring growing season. Practice dry winter management (November–February); this thermal stress is essential for the induction of 'Eros' flower buds.
  5. Scientific/Historical Anecdote: The genus Lobivia was established by botanist Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose in 1922. Historically, these plants were separated from Echinopsis because of their shorter floral tubes and day-blooming habits. Interestingly, many Lobivia hybrids like 'Eros' are "cold-hardy" compared to other cacti, having evolved to survive the thin air and freezing nights of the Andes.
