Product Details

Vibrant Sunset Bloom: Lobivia hybrid 'Calliope'

A rare masterpiece of color-shifting petals, this hybrid is a must-have centerpiece for any serious cacti collection.

  1. Origin & History of Name: The genus name Lobivia is an anagram of Bolivia, the country where most species originate. 'Calliope' is named after the Greek Muse of eloquence and epic poetry, chosen to reflect the dramatic, "poetic" intensity of its multi-toned flowers.
  2. Morphology: This cactus features a globose (rounded) green epidermis with well-defined costae (ribs) protected by short, radial spines. Its most striking feature is the funnelform flower, displaying a gradient from magenta-pink tips to an orange-yellow throat, with multiple layers of lanceolate petals surrounding a central cluster of pollen-bearing stamens.
  3. Habitat & Origin: This is a cultivated hybrid (cultivar), specifically bred for its exaggerated floral colors rather than being found in the wild. Our specimens are propagated through sustainable offsets and grafting, ensuring no impact on wild Andean populations.
  4. Cultivation Profile:
    • Substrate: A strictly mineral-based mix (50% grit/pumice, 25% coarse sand, 25% organic compost) to prevent root rot in humid Indian climates.
    • Light: Requires 6–8 hours of direct morning sun; provide 50% shade cloth during extreme North Indian summer afternoons to prevent epidermis scorching.
    • Water/Dormancy: Water deeply when the medium is bone-dry during the growing season (March–October). Maintain a strict dry dormancy in winter to trigger spring budding.
  5. Scientific/Historical Anecdote: The genus Lobivia was first established by botanist Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose in 1922. It was later merged into Echinopsis, but collectors and breeders still use the "Lobivia" designation because these plants remain distinct for their diurnal (daytime) blooming habits, unlike many of their nocturnal Echinopsis relatives.
