The Scarlet Sun-Cup: Matucana calliantha

A high-altitude Peruvian treasure prized for its architectural geometry and oversized, vivid crimson blooms.

  1. Origin & History of Name: The genus name Matucana is derived from the town of Matucana, Peru, located near the habitat where the first specimens were documented. The specific epithet calliantha comes from the Greek kallos (beautiful) and anthos (flower), a direct tribute to the plant's exceptionally large and symmetrical floral display compared to its peers.
  2. Morphology: This solitary cactus features a globose (spherical) to short-cylindrical epidermis in a rich grayish-green. It is characterized by roughly 7 to 14 broad, blunt costae (ribs) adorned with prominent areoles. Its spines are stout and curved, but the true highlight is the zygomorphic flower—a funnel-shaped bloom that emerges from the apex with striking bilateral symmetry.
  3. Habitat & Origin: Matucana calliantha is a wild species native to the Department of Cajamarca in northern Peru. It grows on rocky slopes at elevations between 1,500 and 2,100 meters. Our specimens are nursery-grown from seed to ensure the protection of wild populations and support CITES-compliant sustainability.
  4. Cultivation Profile:
    • Substrate: A strictly mineral-based mix consisting of 70% grit (pumice, perlite, or crushed brick) and 30% organic matter to prevent root rot.
    • Light: Bright, indirect sunlight. In the Indian summer, provide 50% shade cloth protection to prevent epidermal scorching during peak afternoon hours.
    • Water/Dormancy: Water deeply only when the medium is bone-dry. During the Indian monsoon and winter, withhold water entirely to respect its mandatory dry dormancy period.
  5. Scientific/Historical Anecdote: For decades, Matucana calliantha was the subject of intense botanical debate. Because its flowers are so distinct from other Matucana species, it was briefly moved to its own genus, Submatucana. However, DNA sequencing eventually confirmed it as a true Matucana, proving that its unique floral morphology was an evolutionary adaptation to specific high-altitude pollinators rather than a different lineage.
