A much-branched, rock-loving succulent from the granite outcrops of southern Africa, grown for its thick, upright, diamond-patterned green stems and clusters of small cream-and-yellow flowers that appear in a flush each autumn. Tough, sculptural, and easy-going once established, this is a succulent with a genuinely adventurous namesake behind it.

Origin of Name

The genus name Monadenium comes from the Greek monos ("single") and aden ("gland") — a reference to this genus's distinctive flower structure, carrying just a single gland at the margin of the cyathium rather than the ring of several seen in most relatives. The genus was established in the early 20th century by British botanist Nicholas Edward Brown of Kew — the same botanist who formally described this species.

The species epithet lugardiae honors Charlotte Eleanor Lugard-Howard (1859–1939), a British painter and plant collector who, with her husband Major Edward James Lugard, collected extensively across Bechuanaland (modern Botswana). Around 1896–97, Charlotte gathered specimens in the remote Kwebe Hills near Lake Ngami and sent them to Kew, where Brown used her material to describe several new species — this one among them — in her honor. The feminine ending -iae (rather than -ii) signals it was named for a woman, a small but telling detail from an era when women's fieldwork rarely got credited so directly.

Taxonomically, the plant has since shifted genus: molecular studies revealed Monadenium nested within Euphorbia, and botanists led by Peter Bruyns folded it in, giving the plant its current accepted name, Euphorbia lugardiae — though Monadenium lugardiae remains the name most growers still use.

Origin of Plant

Native to a broad stretch of southern Africa — Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Eswatini, and South Africa's Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and KwaZulu-Natal provinces — growing on granite outcrops and among rocks in sandy miombo woodland and wooded grassland, often in the shade of termite mounds, up to about 1,100 m elevation. Its range overlaps closely with the same Bechuanaland landscapes Charlotte Lugard-Howard explored by horseback and ox-wagon in the 1890s.

Description

A much-branched succulent shrublet, typically 10–60 cm tall, built around thick, fleshy, cylindrical green stems 1.5–3 cm in diameter, erect or gently leaning from a woody base. The stems carry a distinctive diamond-shaped pattern of shallow, flattened tubercles with circular leaf scars (no spines) — a quilted, geometric texture. Fleshy obovate leaves (~9 × 4 cm) cluster toward the stem tips. In autumn, small cream flower clusters rimmed in yellow appear in generous numbers, followed by small ridged seed capsules.

Conservation Status

Not formally assessed on the IUCN Red List; given its wide distribution across six countries and tolerance of varied rocky habitats, it isn't currently a species of particular concern. Trade in wild-collected succulent Euphorbiaceae is regulated under CITES Appendix II — nursery-propagated stock is the responsible choice.

Care

Light: Plenty of bright light — full sun to lightly filtered light, or the brightest indoor window — to keep growth sturdy and encourage the autumn flowering flush.
Watering: Doesn't like prolonged drought — water regularly through the growing season (roughly weekly in summer), easing off in winter; avoid waterlogging.
Soil: Well-draining succulent/cactus mix, echoing its native gritty granite-outcrop soils.
Temperature: Best in warm conditions, happiest well above freezing, protected from frost.
General tips: Propagate from stem cuttings, callused before potting — the milky sap irritates skin and eyes, so use gloves. Feed lightly during the growing season if potted. Its branching habit suits rock gardens or wide, shallow containers.

An Interesting Note

It's easy to overlook how much of the botanical record from this era rests on the fieldwork of women who rarely got top billing. Charlotte Lugard-Howard trained as a professional painter before turning to plant collecting alongside her husband in one of the more remote corners of the British colonial world — travelling to the Kalahari fringe near Lake Ngami when getting there at all was a serious undertaking. The specimens she shipped back to Kew were significant enough that several, including this one, were named directly after her. Every time this plant flowers in a collector's window today, it's a small, living footnote to a 19th-century expedition most people have never heard of.
