Notocactus crassigibbus (Yellow Flower)

A compact, globular Brazilian cactus that transforms each blooming season into a crown of enormous, satiny yellow flowers — as this potted specimen shows, with six wide-open blooms and a bud still to come, all dwarfing the small spiny body they grow from. Slow, tidy, and easy to grow, it's a rewarding choice for anyone who wants outsized flower drama from a genuinely low-maintenance little cactus.

Origin of Name

The genus name under which this plant is still most widely sold, Notocactus, combines the Greek notos ("south") with "cactus" — a straightforward reference to the group's exclusively southern South American range. German botanist Karl Moritz Schumann first recognized it as a subgroup within Echinocactus in 1898, and Czech botanist Alberto Vojtěch Frič raised it to full genus status in 1928. More recent taxonomic work by botanists David Hunt and Reto Nyffeler folded Notocactus, along with several other related genera, into the broader genus Parodia — itself named in honor of Domingo Parodi, an early investigator of Paraguayan flora, when Italian-Argentine botanist Carlos Spegazzini first published the genus in 1923. Today the plant carries the formal name Parodia crassigibba, though "Notocactus" remains the name most growers and nurseries use, partly because — as collectors have long noted — the easygoing Notocactus-type species are strikingly simple to grow compared to many of their thornier Parodia cousins.

The species epithet crassigibbus (or crassigibba, in its current combination) is built from two Latin words: crassus, meaning "thick" or "stout," and gibbus, meaning "hump" or "swelling." Together they describe the plant's distinctively broad, chin-like tubercles that bulge prominently between its ribs. It was formally described in 1970 by Friedrich Ritter, a German-born botanist and explorer who spent decades — from the 1930s through the 1970s — traveling South America collecting and describing cacti in the field, discovering many of the species that fill this genus today.

Origin of Plant

Notocactus crassigibbus is native to Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state of Brazil, where it grows rooted in rocky soil within the region's grassland and scrubland habitats. Like its Notocactus relatives, it belongs to a group of cacti confined to the temperate, relatively cool southern reaches of South America — Brazil, Uruguay, and northern Argentina — a markedly different climate from the classic hot desert most people associate with cactus country.

Description

A small, solitary, globular cactus that stays compact even at maturity, typically reaching only about 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) tall. Its body carries 10 to 16 ribs lined with broad, thick, chin-like tubercles between the areoles — the very feature its species name describes — armed with 6 to 14 slender, somewhat flattened radial spines and, when present, a central spine that curves downward. Its real showpiece is its flowering: large, satiny, funnel-shaped blooms in bright golden yellow open from the crown of the plant, their petals surrounding a dense, sunny cluster of yellow-orange stamens, exactly as seen in this flowering specimen, several blooms open at once around the small spiny body. The species' free-flowering habit and manageable size have earned it the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit as a houseplant.

Conservation Status

Wild populations of Notocactus crassigibbus in Rio Grande do Sul have come under pressure as native rocky grassland habitat has been converted to agricultural and grazing land, and the species is considered threatened in the wild for that reason. Like all cacti, it's also protected under CITES Appendix II, which regulates international trade in wild-collected specimens — one more reason to choose a nursery-propagated plant like this one rather than a wild-collected import.

Care

Light: Full sun to bright light encourages the best spine definition and the most reliable flowering, though it also tolerates some part shade.

Watering: Water regularly through spring and summer, letting the soil dry out between waterings; cut back sharply in winter, when the plant should be kept nearly dry.

Soil: A fast-draining mineral mix — standard cactus potting soil cut roughly 50/50 with pumice or extra perlite works well.

Temperature: Hardy to about USDA zones 9b–11, tolerating brief dips to around -4°C (25°F) when kept dry, though it's best protected from hard frost.

General tips: A slow but steady grower that stays naturally tidy and compact, making it well suited to a small pot on a sunny windowsill or patio. Give it plenty of direct sun and a proper winter rest to encourage the heaviest flower show each season.

An Interesting Note

Few cactus genera illustrate the messiness of botanical reclassification quite like this one. Parodia crassigibba alone has accumulated well over twenty documented synonyms over the decades, as botanists repeatedly reshuffled Notocactus and its relatives in and out of separate genera before ultimately merging them all into Parodia. Growers, meanwhile, largely ignored the paperwork — this plant has been sold and grown as a "Notocactus" for over half a century, and most collectors still know it by that name today, whatever the botanical journals currently say.
