Opuntia microdasys var. albispina
Product Details

Origin of Name:

The name "Opuntia microdasys var. albispina" refers to a variety of the Opuntia microdasys cactus species, characterized by its white or pale-colored spines (glochids). The genus name "Opuntia" is derived from the ancient Greek city of Opus, where a type of edible prickly pear cactus was found. The specific epithet "microdasys" means "small and hairy" in Greek, describing the plant's small, dense glochids. The varietal name "albispina" means "white-spined" in Latin, highlighting the distinctive spination of this particular variety.
Technical Description of Plant:
Opuntia microdasys var. albispina, also known as the "Angel's Wings" cactus, is a freely clustering, succulent variety of the Opuntia microdasys species. It forms a dense, shrub-like plant that can reach up to 60 cm (24 inches) in height and 1.5 m (5 feet) in width. The plant's pad-like stems (cladodes) are oval to round, typically 7.5-15 cm (3-6 inches) long and 4-12 cm (1.6-4.7 inches) wide. Instead of sharp spines, the stems are covered in numerous, dense clusters of white or pale-colored glochids (small, barbed bristles) that are 2-3 mm (0.08-0.12 inches) long, giving the plant a soft, fuzzy appearance.
Origin of Plant:
Opuntia microdasys, including the var. albispina, is native to central and northern Mexico, specifically found in the states of Coahuila, Hidalgo, Jalisco, Nuevo León, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas, and Zacatecas. The species is widespread and common in its native range, thriving in desert hills, uplands, and xerophyllous scrub habitats at elevations between 1,700-2,100 meters (5,600-6,900 feet) above sea level.
Conservation Status:
Opuntia microdasys, including the var. albispina, is not considered threatened or endangered. The species is widespread and common throughout its native range in Mexico. However, as with many cactus species, it is essential to support sustainable cultivation and collection practices to ensure the long-term preservation of this plant.
Care Instructions:
Opuntia microdasys var. albispina requires full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil. Water the plant sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. During the winter months, the plant can tolerate cooler temperatures down to around 5-10°C (41-50°F), but it should be protected from frost. Propagation is easy, as the plant can be readily grown from cuttings taken at any time during the growing season.
