Origin of Name

The genus name "Parodia" honors Domingo Parodi, a pioneer in studying the flora of Paraguay, while "tabularis" suggests a "table-like" form, referring to the plant's flattened spherical shape. The name Notocactus, often used synonymously, comes from the Greek for "back" or "south" and "cactus," indicating the southern origins of these plants.

Technical Description of Plant

Parodia tabularis exhibits a flattened globe shape that can grow up to 6 inches in diameter. Its surface is divided into numerous ribs lined with areoles from which emerge small but sharp spines. The spines range in color from yellow to brown, providing a protective yet decorative exterior. This cactus is particularly noted for its large, yellow flowers that bloom from the crown in summer, creating a striking contrast against the green body. The flowers are followed by small, round fruits that carry seeds.

Origin of Plant

Native to South America, particularly Brazil, Parodia tabularis thrives in rocky outcrops and grasslands, where it has adapted to survive in well-drained soils with periodic moisture. Its natural habitat has shaped its resilience and ability to store water, making it well-suited to environments that mimic its original climate and terrain.

Conservation Status

As of the last update, Parodia tabularis does not have a specific conservation status but, like many cacti, faces threats from habitat loss and overcollection. Conservation efforts focus on habitat preservation and promoting cultivation among enthusiasts to reduce pressure on wild populations.

Care Instructions

Parodia tabularis prefers bright, indirect light and well-draining soil. Water moderately during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings, and reduce watering in the winter to mimic its natural dry season. This plant is cold-sensitive and should be protected from frost. Fertilize lightly during the spring and summer months to support growth and flowering. With its relatively easy care and striking appearance, Parodia tabularis is a delightful addition to any cactus collection, offering beauty and a glimpse into the diversity of South American flora.
