Six European-bred Hildewintera hybrids in one collector's set. These golden-spined "rat-tail" cacti are famous for flowering in repeated flushes from spring to autumn. Each cultivar comes from careful crossing of the Golden Rat Tail (Cleistocactus winteri, formerly Hildewintera aureispina) with other Andean cacti, and each brings its own spine colour and flower character. All six are easy to grow, look perfect in hanging baskets, and make an instant living rainbow of blooms.
1. Hildewintera Hybrid 'Badisch Gold' (HW013)
A German-bred hybrid whose name honours the Baden region. It has slender, fresh-green stems clothed in fine golden-bronze spines, with a warm reddish tint at the growing tip. The stems lengthen into graceful, arching columns, and they're ideal for a hanging pot or a trained upright display. It is a free-flowering collector's classic.
2. Hildewintera Hybrid 'Humkes Röschen' (HW022)
"Humke's Little Rose" is one of the best-loved Hildewintera hybrids in Europe. Its new spines emerge fox-red and darken with age. Large apricot-pink blooms appear in flush after flush through the warm months, making it one of the most generous bloomers in the group.
3. Hildewintera Hybrid 'Weixdorf' × 'Flying Saucer' (HW024)
This cross combines a Hildewintera cultivar with 'Flying Saucer', an Echinopsis-type hybrid famed for its large flowers. The result has sturdy, bright-green stems with neat rows of golden spines and a glowing yellow crown. It's a unique cross for collectors who love experimental hybrids.
4. Hildewintera Hybrid Pan 18.25.99 (HW036)
This is a numbered breeder selection, identified by its seedling code rather than a cultivar name, the way new hybrids are tracked before release. It is a rare find for collectors who enjoy growing unnamed seedlings and discovering each plant's own flower character.
5. Hildewintera Hybrid 'Mamachita' (HW003)
A compact, densely spined form with soft, pale golden-cream spines that give the stem a fuzzy, silvery glow. Its chunky, upright growth suits small pots and windowsills. It is a charming, tactile plant with plenty of personality.
6. Hildewintera Hybrid 'Humkes Lilo Fee' (HW017)
"Humke's Lilo Fairy" comes from the same German breeding line as 'Humkes Röschen'. Its slim, upright stems are topped with bright yellow spination at the growing tip. It is an elegant, graceful plant and a lovely companion to its "sister" cultivar in this set.
Care for the whole set: Give bright light with morning sun. Water well when the soil is dry from spring to autumn, and keep it nearly dry in winter. Use gritty, fast-draining soil. A cool, dry winter rest at 8–12°C encourages the heaviest flowering.
