Product Details

The Bronze Finger: Rebutia einsteinii var. gonjianii

A highly coveted high-altitude miniature featuring unique brownish-purple stems and vibrant yellow blooms, resembling a tiny, clustering ancient artifact.

  1. Origin & History of Name The genus Rebutia honors Pierre Rebut, a 19th-century French cactus nurseryman. The specific epithet einsteinii was chosen by the eccentric Czech botanist Alberto Vojtěch Frič to honor the physicist Albert Einstein. The varietal name gonjianii was designated by Argentine botanist Roberto Kiesling, naming it after the cactus collector B. Gonjian, who was active in discovering South American species.
  2. Morphology Unlike the typical globular Rebutia, this variety is distinct for its slender, cylindrical ("finger-like") stems that cluster to form small mounds. The epidermis is a striking dark brownish-bronze or purplish-green, a stress coloration that persists even in cultivation. It features tiny, pectinate (comb-like) spines that lay flat against the stem, making it relatively soft to the touch. In spring, it erupts with large, silky yellow flowers that contrast sharply with the dark body.
  3. Habitat & Origin This is a wild species endemic to the high Andes of the Jujuy province in northern Argentina (specifically the Quebrada del Toro region), growing at elevations exceeding 3,000 meters. Due to over-collection in the wild, ethically sourced, seed-grown specimens are the only sustainable option for collectors.
  4. Cultivation Profile (Indian Context)
    • Substrate: Strictly mineral-based. Use a mix of 70-80% grit (pumice, perlite, or crushed brick) and only 20% organic compost. In humid Indian zones, pure mineral substrate is safer to prevent rot.
    • Light: Needs bright, high-intensity light to maintain its bronze color and compact shape. However, protect from the harsh midday sun (12 PM–4 PM) during the Indian summer to prevent scorching.
    • Water & Dormancy:
      • Summer/Spring: Water deeply but infrequently (only when the pot is feather-light).
      • Monsoon: Keep completely dry or under rain protection; high humidity combined with wet soil is fatal.
      • Winter: Induce a dry dormancy from November to February to ensure flowering; cool nights are beneficial.
  5. Scientific/Historical Anecdote When Czech botanist A.V. Frič discovered this species, he reportedly told a German ambassador during the Nazi occupation that he refused to name a cactus after Hitler because "it would be a weak species that would soon perish." Instead, he defiantly named this resilient, beautiful high-mountain species einsteinii after Albert Einstein, who had recently fled the Nazi regime—a bold political statement immortalized in taxonomy.
