Trichocereus huascha (Golden Torch Cactus)

Sun-loving and fast-blooming, this Argentine torch cactus erupts each spring in flowers so large they can rival the width of the stem they grow from. The species flowers in shades of yellow, orange, or red — and the plant offered here is the golden-yellow form pictured, with warm amber-edged petals and a bright golden throat. A rugged, easy-care classic for anyone who wants real desert drama on a windowsill or patio.

Origin of Name

Trichocereus comes from the Greek thrix ("hair") and cereus ("torch"), referring to the tall, torch-like columnar stems and the hair-like bristles ringing each areole — hence the common name "torch cactus." The species epithet huascha is a local Argentine word, often cited as Quechua, meaning "orphan." It was first published in 1893 by French botanist Frédéric Albert Constantin Weber as Cereus huascha. Since then the plant has bounced through half a dozen genera — Echinopsis, Lobivia, Helianthocereus, Soehrensia — after botanists Friedrich and Rowley reclassified it in 1974, which is why you'll still see it sold under several different scientific names today.

Origin of Plant

Native to the high, dry country of northwestern Argentina, in the provinces of Catamarca and La Rioja, growing on rocky and sandy slopes at 500–2,000 meters elevation. It's a landscape of intense sun, little rainfall, and wide swings between hot days and cold nights. In the wild it forms sprawling, low clustering colonies rather than single tall columns.

Description

A clustering, semi-sprawling cactus that branches freely from its base into dense clumps of cylindrical, pale-to-mid-green stems reaching around a meter long and 5–8 cm across. Each stem has 12–18 rounded ribs studded with areoles bearing slender yellowish spines. Large, funnel-shaped flowers open near the stem tips, up to 10 cm long, their tubes wrapped in dense blackish hair. This particular plant blooms golden yellow, as shown — the petals warming to amber at the tips around a dense, sunny-yellow center — though the species overall ranges from yellow through orange to scarlet red. Flowers open in daylight and last a few days at a time through spring into early summer. This natural color variability has made T. huascha a favorite parent in ornamental cactus breeding.

Conservation Status

Not currently threatened, and reasonably common within its native range. Like all cacti, it's protected under CITES Appendix II, regulating international trade in wild-collected specimens — all the more reason to choose nursery-propagated plants like this one.

Care

Light: As much bright, direct sun as possible — strong light drives good spine color and reliable flowering.

Watering: Water generously in spring and summer, letting the soil dry out fully between waterings. Cut back hard in winter; damp, cool conditions invite rot.

Soil: A fast-draining, mineral-rich cactus mix — standard cactus soil with extra pumice, perlite, or coarse sand.

Temperature: Heat-tolerant and surprisingly cold-hardy for a South American cactus, handling brief dips to around -4°C (25°F) when dry — roughly USDA zones 9b–11b.

General tips: A fast, easy grower that pups readily from the base; offsets root easily once callused for a few days. Repot in spring if needed, and expect a bigger flower show each year with plenty of sun.

An Interesting Note

Few cacti wear their identity crisis as visibly as this one — sold as Trichocereus, Echinopsis, or Soehrensia huascha depending on who you ask, and hybridizing so readily in the wild that many collection specimens can't be traced to a single "pure" form. Growers have leaned into it: T. huascha is one of the most popular parents in ornamental torch-cactus breeding, prized for exactly the kind of vivid, unpredictable flower color you see in this golden-yellow form.
