Opuntia, commonly known as prickly pear cactus, is one of the most recognisable cactus groups, characterised by its flat, paddle-shaped stems called cladodes. Native to the Americas, Opuntia species vary widely in size, spine coverage and growth habit, ranging from compact plants to large, branching specimens. Many produce bright yellow, orange or red flowers, followed by colourful fruits in suitable conditions. Their adaptable nature, bold structure and edible fruit in several species have made them important in gardens, landscapes and traditional food cultures.
